URL Shortener vs Password-Protected Link: Which Should You Use?
Compare ordinary short links and password-protected links for public posts, meeting invitations and client resources. Understand destination visibility, QR codes and expiry.
Use an ordinary short link when everyone should reach a public destination immediately. Use a password-protected link when you want recipients to enter a separate password before the destination is revealed. A link can be both short and password-protected; its length and its access rules are separate features.
LOCK.PUB follows the second approach. You enter a destination URL, set a password and share the generated link. It does not offer a password-free redirect in this flow.
Compare the Recipient Experience
The ordinary-link column below describes a redirect without an optional password feature, rather than every shortener or paid plan on the market.
| Question | Ordinary short link without a password | LOCK.PUB protected link |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when someone opens it? | The visitor follows the redirect, sometimes with a preview or interstitial | The visitor enters a password before the destination is revealed |
| Who can follow the wrapper? | Anyone with the link, subject to provider controls | People with the link and password, subject to expiry or access limits if configured |
| Can the destination become visible? | Yes, when the redirect is followed | Yes, after a successful unlock |
| Can the original URL bypass the wrapper? | Yes | Yes |
| Do destination permissions still apply? | Yes | Yes |
| Does it guarantee no access records? | No; check the provider’s policy | No; successful opens can create access records |
| Can I share it as a QR code? | If the provider or another tool generates one | The creator result includes a QR code for the protected link |
Three Situations, Three Decisions
Public menu, shop page or campaign
People scanning a poster or opening a public post usually need the destination with as few steps as possible. Use a normal hyperlink or an ordinary shortener when you do not need an extra password. Putting the password beside the link makes the password widely available and adds little restriction.
Meeting invitation for a specific group
A password-protected link can keep the meeting URL out of the initial message. Send the password through a separate channel. Keep the meeting service’s own passcode, waiting room and participant controls in place; the wrapper cannot replace them.
Client review or shared file
A protected link can add a handoff step before revealing the resource address. Retain the storage service’s own permissions. If a recipient needs authorization from the original site, unlocking LOCK.PUB does not supply it. After opening, the recipient can still copy the original URL or save permitted content.
What Expiry Actually Changes
Pro offers optional expiry and access-count limits in the full link creator. These controls apply to the LOCK.PUB route. They do not revoke the original URL, remove a downloaded copy or make a screenshot disappear.
If access must end at the original source, also change the source’s sharing permissions or revoke its invitation. Read the link expiration guide for planning the handoff window.
Short, Private and Anonymous Are Different Claims
A short link changes the address you share. A password gate adds an unlock step. Guest creation lets you start without registering. None of those features alone establishes that a service collects no data.
LOCK.PUB can record successful opens with timestamps, IP hashes and available browser, device, approximate-location or referrer information. In this URL flow, the service processes the password and destination during unlock; it is not end-to-end encryption. See anonymous URL shortening and access records and the privacy policy.
There is also no guarantee that the generated URL has fewer characters than an already-short destination. Choose the tool for the recipient experience you need.
Getting Started with a Protected Link
- Paste the original URL into the existing link creator.
- Set a strong password and a neutral public label.
- Configure optional Pro settings if needed, then create the link.
- Copy the link or use its QR code, and communicate the password separately.
Guests can create 3 links per month; connected Free accounts can create 5 per month across content types. Pro removes the monthly creation limit, with request rate limits still applying. Recipients do not need a LOCK.PUB account.
