Fake Government App Scam: How Fraudsters Use Malicious Apps to Drain Bank Accounts
"This is the Social Security Administration. Your account requires verification. Please install our secure verification app: http://xxxxx"
If you receive a call or text asking you to install a government app from a link, stop immediately — it's a scam. The FBI reported that fake app scams cost Americans over $500 million in 2025, with government impersonation apps being the fastest-growing category.
How the Fake Government App Scam Works
Step 1: The Official-Sounding Call
Scammers call or text pretending to be from the IRS, Social Security, Medicare, or your state government. They say you need to install an app for identity verification, tax filing, benefit claims, or security updates.
Step 2: The Malicious App
Instead of directing you to the App Store or Google Play, they send a direct download link for an APK file (Android) or a link to a convincing fake app page.
Step 3: Excessive Permissions
Once installed, the app requests alarming permissions:
- Read SMS — to intercept banking OTP codes
- Accessibility services — to control your screen remotely
- Device admin — to prevent uninstallation
- Contacts — to spread the scam to your contacts
Step 4: Account Drainage
The app runs silently in the background, intercepting your banking OTPs and allowing scammers to transfer money out of your accounts — sometimes within minutes.
Real vs. Fake Government Apps

| Source | App Store / Google Play | Direct link, APK file |

| Size | Normal (50-100MB) | Suspiciously small (10-20MB) |
| Updates | Through official store | Cannot update |
| Reviews | Thousands of reviews | None or fake reviews |
